Edited by Rob Simone

The Epic of Gilgamesh is an epic story from Babylonia and is among the earliest known literary works.

Scholars surmise that a series of Sumerian legends and poems about the mythological hero-king Gilgamesh, thought to be a ruler in the 3rd millennium BC, were gathered into a longer Akkadian poem.

The essential story revolves around the relationship between Gi! lgamesh, a king who has become distracted and disheartened by his rule, and a friend, Enkidu, who is half-wild and who undertakes dangerous quests with Gilgamesh.

This story is often credited by historians as being one of the first literary work with high emphasis on immortality.

Studio! : Wea-de s Moines Video Release Date: 03/28/2006 Run time: 138 minutesCult Epics founder, Nico B., claims in his liner notes that he never thought he’d make a biographical film about Bettie Page’s last three years as famed pin-up star, but finding look-alike Paige Richards to play the part in Bettie Page:Dark Angel changed his mind. This film recreates Page’s trials and tribulations as an aspiring actress, by placing dramatized scenes from her life between faux bondage flicks that have the grainy, black and white quality of the long-lost real ones. Nico B. studied the remaining stills to imagine live action for these entertaining bondage films that, combined, take up over half of the movie. Scenes of Bettie (played by Paige Richards) crying to her boyfriend about her frustrations are benign as are most narrative scenes in porn. Rather, the best parts in Dark Angel are the vintage-looking fetish sequences that show Bettie as dominatrix, Bettie as a captive jungle! girl dressed in shredded furs, Bettie legs tied to a coffee tables’, and the most classic, Bettie as Pony-Slave. Of course, seeing the real Bettie would be preferable, but Richards looks uncannily similar, sharing the same sweet smile and inner radiance that made Bettie Page so famous. Plot-wise, Bettie Page:Dark Angel explains Bettie Page’s sudden disappearance from the media during a scary sequence in which horny fans and an obscenities court case slapped against her agent, Irving Klaw, leave Bettie unsure about her own safety. The kitschy premise of the film makes Bettie Page:Dark Angel a fun homage to the Queen, and for future pin-up girls, the Two-Disc Limited Edition set offers Bunny Yeager, Bettie’s original photographer, interviewing Richards then setting out to various scenes for sexy photo shoots. --Trinie Dalton

ALICE is an American Law student in London. Knocked down by a black cab, she wakes with amnesia in a world that's a million miles from home Wonderland. We follow her adventures as she is dragged through an underworld filled with twisted individuals and the lowest low-lifes by the enigmatic cab-driver WHITEY (The White Rabbit). She needs to find out who she is, where she's from, and use what wits she has left to get back home in one piece.Lewis Carroll's 19th-century heroine undergoes a 21st-century metamorp! hosis in the feverish, fast-paced Malice in Wonderland. Lost's leggy Maggie Grace plays Alice Dodgson, an American heiress living in London. As the action begins, she's fleeing from a couple of unidentified assailants when she runs into Danny Dyer's cockney cabby, Whitey, who gives her a ride (a rabbit's foot dangles from his rear-view mirror). Suffering from amnesia, she decides to accompany him to Mob boss Harry Hunt's big party, but first Whitey has to get Hunt a present (Inspector Lynley's Nathaniel Parker plays the urbane ex-con). During their travels, Alice pops a couple of Whitey's consciousness-altering pills and tangles with a parade of peculiar characters, from a diminutive purse snatcher with an identical twin to a sharp-dressed disc jockey with magical powers. When she loses track of Whitey, an agoraphobic duchess (Rosemary and Thyme's Pam Ferris) lends her a hand. Meanwhile, Alice's pampered past comes rushing back in fits and spurts! . Soon she's wondering if her chauffeur-turned-protector reall! y likes her or whether he's just after the reward money. Like Terry Gilliam with attention deficit disorder, Simon Fellows directs with speed and flair--tilted angles, color filters, and surrealistic flourishes--but Malice sometimes looks more like a music video than a proper movie. Written by Jayson Rothwell, his version of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland adds naughty words, gunplay, and prostitutes ("tarts"), which makes it less suitable for minors than the Tim Burton version, but the unlikely romance is a sweet touch. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

The Count of Monte Cristo

  • Alexandre Dumas' THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO follows the adventures of Edmond Dant s (G rard Depardieu), a 19th-century French version of James Bond or Batman, a rich, ruthless, and suave purveyor of homemade justice. This French production goes all out, having the destinction of being the first filmed version of the newly restored unabridged version of Dumas'ic, which runs about 800 pages.
A billionaire auto magnate's virginal teenage daughter falls in love with an older, free-spirited drifter. Their romance is one that her parents vehemently want to prevent. Lisa (Ornella Muti) is very curious to explore her new-found feelings of desire,From internationally acclaimed director Volker Schlöndorff (The Tin Drum) and starring Academy Award® winner Jeremy Irons(Reversal of Fortune, Dead Ringers) comes Swann In Love, a tale of obsessive love set against the colorful backdro! p of Paris in the 1890s. Swann (Irons) falls in love with a young courtesan, and soon finds himself tormented by his unrelenting sexual desire. Based on the novel by Marcel
Proust, Swann in Love is a visually stunning film, bursting with life, love, and passion.
Everybody talks about reading Proust's Remembrance of Things Past, but do you know anyone who actually has? Here's a way to fake it: this film from Volker Schlöndorff dramatizes one section of the ponderous novel, casting Jeremy Irons as a French aristocrat who makes himself something of a laughingstock with his obsessive pursuit of a faithless courtesan (or is that redundant) played by Ornella Muti. Some may find it slow going, but the film moves a lot faster than the book. And there is a certain hypnotic appeal to it, enhanced by Sven Nykvist's lush cinematography. Besides, is there an actor in movies today who can convey more emotional agony in a single longing look than Irons? --Marshall ! Fine Acclaimed actor Gérard Depardieu stars in the adapta! tion of Alexandre Dumas’ classic tale of love, intrigue and revenge.

The Count of Monte Cristo tells the dramatic story of Edmond Dantès, a young French sailor who is falsely denounced as a traitor and unjustly imprisoned for eighteen years without a trial. After a daring escape, Dantès secures a treasure hidden on the island of Monte Cristo bequeathed to him by a dying inmate. Using these riches, he assumes a new identity and devises a plan to seek vengeance against all those who betrayed him.

The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things

  • Based on the novel by the mysterious and controversial JT LeRoy, Asia Argento's THE HEART IS DECEITFUL ABOVE ALL THINGS is a penetrating look at the emotional and physical bonds between mother and son. Argento, the daughter of Italian horror king Dario Argento (SUSPIRIA), directed and stars in the film, playing Sarah, a young woman addicted to sex, drugs, and danger. The movie opens as she ree
ASIA ARGENTO PACK:SCARLET DIVA/LOVE B - DVD MovieHot leading man Rupert Everett (AN IDEAL HUSBAND, MY BEST FRIEND'S WEDDING) stars in a sexy thriller that's all about jealousy, passion, revenge ... and a woman compelled to live her life on the edge! Tired of criminal activity, a wild and beautiful thief named B. (Asia Argento -- QUEEN MARGOT) begins to seek a way out of her dangerous profession. While trying to kick her addiction to crime, she finds love and a stable relationship with a naive schoolteac! her (Jared Harris -- I SHOT ANDY WARHOL) ... until the dark secrets from B.'s past begin to creep into her new life! As ex-partners Paul (Everett) and Bruno (Jonathan Rhys-Meyers -- MICHAEL COLLINS) get back in the picture, B.'s harrowing balancing act threatens to come crashing down!Director Michael Radford made a surprising about-face from his international hit Il Postino to this grungy British romantic crime thriller. Asia Argento (Dario's daughter and costar of Abel Ferrara's New Rose Hotel) is the title character, a street criminal whose specialty is breaking and entering: "I can get into anywhere." Jared Harris (Richard's son and Andy Warhol in I Shot Andy Warhol) is a bookish, shy schoolteacher with a yen for jazz who becomes smitten with Argento's sexy wildcat. Argento brings a vitality to the supercharged street thief trying to break with her past, but stick-in-the-mud Harris is restrained to a fault and Radford never quite finds the right chem! istry to make their union any more than curious. Rupert Everet! t costar s as a smart-mouthed, sleepy-eyed ne'er-do-well whose drug habit puts him deep in debt, and Jonathan Rhys-Meyers is Argento's volatile partner, a jittery young punk on a hair trigger. Radford has more fun with the villains than his ostensible hero; the film bubbles when they're on screen and the movie's single heist scene is a short, sharp, energized shot in the arm to a slowing story. Only Harris sticks out as an impossibly resolute saint who's dedicated his life to a passionate sinner. The conclusion reverberates with echoes of Straw Dogs, as remade by a kinder, gentler filmmaker. --Sean Axmaker Seven-year-old Jeremiah lived a calm, comfortable life in the care of a loving foster home until the day his young mother Sarah (Argento) came to take him against his will into her reckless life of turmoil and depravity, between desolate truck-stops, flea bag motels, strip joints, drug den and deadbeat surrogate dads until he finds himself in the custody of his ultra! -religious grandparents. Having adapted to his new life as a Christian fundamentalist, Sarah returns to claim her son. Bound by a love only a mother and son could have for each other, Sarah pulls Jeremiah further and further into her dementia. When Sarah is finally and wholly consumed by drugs, prostitution and violence, Jeremiah is forced into a desperate struggle to survive the madness of his surroundings.Asia Argento's adaptation of JT Leroy's short story collection, The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things, still has the heartbreaking urgency of a tale about child abuse, regardless of Leroy's proven fraudulent identity. Weaving plots together from Leroy's two books, Sarah, and The Heart Is Deceitful, Argento relays the history of orphaned Jeremiah (Jimmy Bennett/Cole Sprouse), whose mother Sarah (Asia Argento) abandons him as a baby to work as a truck-stop lot lizard for her methamphetamine habit. Sarah tears Jeremiah away from a stable foster home ! to pathetically attempt mothering her seven-year old son. Jere! miah ins tantly grows up in strip clubs, drug dealers' homes, big rigs, and in the hot rod that he and his mother call home. His sadomasochistic sexual psychology also develops prematurely, informed by men who rape and beat him, and a mother whose work as a hooker requires Jeremiah's dressing up as a girl to pass as her younger sister. Enter a born again, psychotically zealous Grandfather (Peter Fonda) who takes temporary custody of Jeremiah, and the viewer begins to understand Sarah's severe rebelliousness, sensing that the punk, 23-year old prostitute may be a better parent for Jeremiah, simply because she loves him. Shot by Eric Alan Edwards (Kids, My Own Private Idaho), and with a soundtrack including Sonic Youth, Subhumans, Billy Corgan, and Hasil Adkins, the film has a raunchy, Southern appeal similar to that of Leroy's books. Cameos appearances by Winona Ryder and Marilyn Manson add rock star power. Argento keeps it sexy, as this is as much a story of the mother-child b! ond as it is about the malformation of a boy's sexual identity. True or not, The Heart is Deceitful Above All Things is a sincere yet stylized rendition of a terribly sad story. --Trinie Dalton

Best of all, this book is spilling over with sidebar material, including tips for home chefs, interviews with contestants, fabulous photos, and fun trivia related to the chefs, dishes, and ingredients that make Top Chef a favorite. With Think Like a Chef, Tom Colicchio has created a new kind of cookbook. Rather than list a series of restaurant recipes, he uses simple steps to deconstruct a chef's creative process, making it easily available to any home cook.

He starts with techniques: What's roasting, for example, and how do yo! u do it in the oven or on top of the stove? He also gets you comfortable with braising, sautéing, and making stocks and sauces. Next he introduces simple "ingredients" -- roasted tomatoes, say, or braised artichokes -- and tells you how to use them in a variety of ways. So those easy roasted tomatoes may be turned into anything from a vinaigrette to a caramelized tomato tart, with many delicious options in between.

In a section called Trilogies, Tom takes three ingredients and puts them together to make one dish that's quick and other dishes that are increasingly more involved. As Tom says, "Juxtaposed in interesting ways, these ingredients prove that the whole can be greater than the sum of their parts," and you'll agree once you've tasted the Ragout of Asparagus, Morels, and Ramps or the Baked Free-Form "Ravioli" -- both dishes made with the same trilogy of ingredients.

The final section of the books offers simple recipes for components -- from zucchini wit! h lemon thyme to roasted endive with whole spices to boulanger! ie potat oes -- that can be used in endless combinations.

Written in Tom's warm and friendly voice and illustrated with glorious photographs of finished dishes, Think Like a Chef will bring out the master chef in all of us.

From the Hardcover edition.Cookbooks by chefs can be daunting. They're apt to include tricky restaurant recipes, or, alternately, watered-down "translations." Tom Colicchio, chef at Manhattan's top-rated Gramercy Tavern, has a better way. Think like a chef, he advises, and you tap into food preparation creativity--the ability to forgo recipes, when you wish, for spontaneous kitchen invention. In a series of innovative chapters that explore cooking fundamentals, culinary themes and variations, and "plug-in" component preparations, Colicchio provides a cooking "anatomy" for gaining kitchen mastery. The book's 100-plus recipes are offered not as ends in themselves (though they stand as delicious examples of Colicchio's simple ye! t sophisticated style), but as illustrative keys to the culinary processes.

How does it work? Beginning with a chapter that reviews basic cooking techniques, and includes exemplary stock- and sauce-making formulas, the book then presents a series of "studies," building-block recipes like Roasted Tomatoes, followed by simple-to-sophisticated variations, such as Roasted-Tomato Risotto. A chapter called "Trilogies" explores clusters of three-ingredient recipes--duck, root vegetables, and apples is one ingredient grouping--that show how various techniques, applied to the same ingredients, yield various exciting dishes. "Component Cooking," which focuses on vegetables (Colicchio's major source of inspiration), provides recipes like Corn and Potato Pancakes to be used for assembling a "plate." Concluding the book is "Favorites," a selection of Colicchio's specialties that range from My Favorite Chicken Soup to Poached Foie Gras, a taste bonus that also stimul! ates the cooking imagination. Illustrated with more than 100 c! olor pho tos, and including a wide range of tips, Think Like a Chef succeeds at helping readers see through a chef's eyes--and in so doing to visualize cooking with fresh insight. --Arthur BoehmThis is a great HAND-SIGNED 8x10 photo! In a crumbling, isolated house at the foot of Mount Kanchenjunga in the Himalayas lives an embittered judge who wants only to retire in peace, when his orphaned granddaughter, Sai, arrives on his doorstep. The judge’s cook watches over her distractedly, for his thoughts are often on his son, Biju, who is hopscotching from one gritty New York restaurant to another. Kiran Desai’s brilliant novel, published to huge acclaim, is a story of joy and despair. Her characters face numerous choices that majestically illuminate the consequences of colonialism as it collides with the modern world.

Shuangxi leaves his hometown for Beijing and soon finds work in a photo studio, hoping that one day he will be able exhibit his own work. He lives with his girlfriend, Xiao Qian, in a rented courtyard, and apart from the humiliation of having his temporary residence permit constantly scrutinized by the police, life is good for Shuangxi, whose first joint exhibition wins praise from critics. However, events soon take a tragic turn when a gas leak asphyxiates his girlfriend and leaves Shuangxi with both physical and psychological injuries. With the persuasion of his family, he reluctantly returns to his hometown, restarting the life that he had been so eager to leave behind. First time filmmaker Shi Lei, a graduate from the Beijing Film Academy, wrote, directed and produced the film, despite being a relatively new arrival to the industry. Unlike his prominent classmate, Wang Xiaoshuai, who made his name as an art-house film director, Shi Lei found his niche filming documentaries for the CCTV Science Channel. After fifteen years in TV, Shi decided that the time was right to return to his cinematic roots, a move that resulted in Shuangxi. The life of a young migrant worker couple who moves into the fashionable nightclub district in Beijing is plunged into turmoil as the wife is raped by her boss at the foot massage parlor. The husband's jealousy and anger is dissipated when he decides to blackmail the rapist, but things become even more problematic when he finds out his wife is pregnant and either man might be the father. LOST IN BEIJING is a controversial assessment of human desires and greed in a China undergoing rapid economic expansion.

The Killer Inside Me

  • KILLER INSIDE ME, THE (DVD MOVIE)
Jessica Alba delivers a most unexpected performance as Mona Gray, a quirky young woman who hides in a private world of numbers when her beloved mathematician father falls ill. But when Mona is offered a job as an elementary school math teacher, she ll introduce the students to her own eccentric gift for numerical obsession. Can the joys of arithmetic multiplied by a shy romance with the school science teacher (Chris Messina of Julie & Julia) help Mona discover a new life she can count on?  J.K. Simmons (Juno), Sonia Braga (Sex and the City), Bailee Madison (Wizards of Waverly Place) and John Shea (Gossip Girl) co-star in this offbeat and heartwarming comedy/drama about second chances, emotional equations and calculating the power of love.Oscar-nominated actor Casey Affleck (Gone Baby Gone) gives his most chilling performance yet in the controversial crime dr! ama The Killer Inside Me. Co-starring Jessica Alba (Fantastic Four), Oscar nominee Kate Hudson (Almost Famous), Emmy nominee Simon Baker (TV s The Mentalist) and Bill Pullman (Independence Day), this modern-day film noir shows a small town sheriff up to his neck in murders: his own. When Affleck s sheriff is asked to railroad a talkative prostitute out of town before she makes trouble, he realizes it s easier to just get rid of her for good. Unfortunately, covering up that murder means eliminating more and more people as his problems and complications spiral out of control. Even worse, he s starting to enjoy committing the crimes a lot more than he ever enjoyed dishing out the punishment. Based on the pulp fiction classic by Jim Thompson (The Grifters), The Killer Inside Me is an assured, stylish film [Guardian UK] that reveals the danger when a lawman s badge is hiding a cold, cold heart. No stranger to literary adaptations, Michael Winterbottom sinks his teeth into Jim Tho! mpson's noir classic for this cinematic murder ballad. Set in ! 1950s Te xas, the story centers on Lou Ford (Casey Affleck, chilling yet strangely sympathetic), whose polite demeanor masks a murderer (and marks Affleck's second lethal Ford after The Assassination of Jesse James). The deputy doesn't lack for compassion, but a twisted childhood drives him to inflict pain. He's also a pathological liar, though a union leader (Elias Koteas) and an attorney (The Mentalist's Simon Baker) have their doubts. When Joyce (Jessica Alba), a hooker, gives him a hard time, Ford slaps her around, apologizes, and then falls for the feisty lady, even though his boss (Tom Bower), on orders from a construction magnate (Ned Beatty), asked him to escort her out of town. Plus, Lou already has a girl, schoolteacher Amy (a brunette Kate Hudson), so he finds a more expedient way to push Joyce--and other inconvenient individuals--out of the picture, but he isn't the sharpest tool in the shed, and his slip-ups outnumber his successes until he comes up with a ! plan to solve his problems once and for all. Cowriter John Curran's dialogue preserves Thompson's pungent text, though Affleck's drawl renders a few lines indistinguishable. Still, the film looks right for the era with bursts of graphic violence that feel postmodern. If it doesn't surpass The Grifters, The Killer Inside Me offers some of the same sinister thrills as No Country for Old Men. --Kathleen C. Fennessy
